UNYPA staff and volunteers unpacking/ drawing their trees of life. Stepping Stones with Children and their Care givers training (Mental Health project)

Learning through practice.

The Stepping Stones methodology promotes learning and self-reflection; this is a journey to move to a more protective and supportive environment for women and girls. The training at UNYPA utilizes Stepping Stones to address young people’s mental health and wellbeing. Young people take a short at building their personal trees of life. Exploring loss, death and Love in ways that build support and empathy among peers. The use of images to unpack and face difficult situations is one approach promoted by the Stepping Stones methodology.

One approach different context!

The Stepping Stones methodology beautifully uses interactive and community participatory exercises to engage different peer groups in understanding some of the  negative cultural practices perpetuating violence against women and girls. Statues of power presented by various peer groups in community have generated discussions on why violence occurs, its effect on  households and how it should be tackled using locally contextualized action.

Older women Peer group in Kaberamaiodo PAG Kaberamaiodo St Peace and Prosperity

Fostering intergenerational dialogue breaking the cycle of violence against women and girls.

The stepping stones methodology promotes the use of  peer dialogue to engage community members from different age groups and gender (Young men, older men, young women and older women) to tackle difficult and sensitive topics collectively. Stepping stones participatory and highly interactive exercises enable them to respectfully share their views and amicably understand the different age group’s experiences and points of view. They can then collectively address topics like sexuality, love, relationships in ways that build and strengthen the social nets for community members who are facing challenges. They are supported to cope with the  negative effects of violence.
